These valves are used whenever it is necessary to maintain a constant pressure difference between two fluids, one of which is the controlled variable (process fluid) and the other a reference signal or simply atmospheric pressure. They operate by automatically regulating the flow of the process fluid (no external signal required), adapting to load variations without the need for manual intervention. Depending on the type of service or, more precisely, the controlled pressure, they can be divided into two main categories: upstream (relief) or downstream (reducing) self-regulating valves.
